North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology ( NERIST ) was founded on 4th March, 1984 by Shri Giani Zail Singh. It is a premier technical institute in North India set up by the Government of India. It has the best facilities and is comparable to any leading Engineering colleges of India. At present, various Certificate, Diploma, Degree courses are being offered by the different departments namely Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Forestry. Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Humanities & Social Sciences also have a pivotal role as supporting department. In May 31, 2005 the Institute received the Deemed University status.

FACTS

Since April 1,1994,the Institute is under the direct control of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), New Delhi. -
The institute offers AICTE approved courses. -
On 31st May, 2005 the university status was conferred by Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India with the recommendations of UGC (Established Under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956) to this Regional Institute for its academic excellence & quality education. -
The Institute has a very active placement cell which provides employment opportunities to the students. The Training Cell organizes a compulsory industrial training for a period of 50 days at the end of every pre-final year during summer vacation.

It is located between hills, in a cool lush green valley. There are 8 hostels in the campus that accommodates 1250 boys and 200 girls. The Institute provides many facilities like Sub Post Office (with Speed Post), a branch of State Bank of India, a Co-operative store, NERIST employees Thrift & Credit Co-operative Society, Mini Co-operative supper market, Co-operative Medical store, NERIST Health Unit, a Police out-post. Canteen & guesthouse facilities are available for the students & staff.
